WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF CALCULATING LAMPS FOR AN ENVIRONMENT?

House lighting influences our behavior in many ways. Besides the aesthetics, a well-lit environment is capable of generating well-being to the residents. The luminosity is still responsible for reproducing a brightness appropriate to the spaces, highlighting decorative objects   and valuing certain details, such as floors and finishes.

Each environment has its own characteristics of use and depends on a suitable amount of light, that is, it should receive clarity according to its necessity and its size. Therefore, performing the correct calculation of lamps is fundamental when seeking to correct the particular needs of each space.

It is also indicated to enjoy the ambient light in several rooms of the house. By prevailing by the influence of natural lighting, it is even possible to reduce the amount of artificial light bulbs. In addition, identifying the optimal power for each space is capable of directly interfering with  the electrical energy savings of  the residence.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE LIGHTING CORRECTLY?

The illuminance for environments is a fundamental concept to define the adequate amount of light for each space and situation. It can be measured by lux (amount of light per square meter) and  lumen  (intensity of light).

The calculation of lux is performed by the amount of luminous flux of a lamp divided by the square meter of space. The lumen represents the amount of light emitted by a lamp – given on the packaging of lighting products, necessary to carry out the lux calculation.

For a correct illuminance of internal environments, the ABNT (National Agency of Norms and Techniques) has created a standard ( NBR 5413 ) that determines the ideal level for each space, according to the activities that will be performed in that room. Therefore, despite the lux and auxiliary lamp calculation in planning, it is recommended to follow this standard.

There is a minimum illuminance indicated for the most used environments of the house. For example: for a living room, the minimum amount of lux should be 150 (general) to 500 (local: reading, writing, etc.); already in the kitchen, this variation ranges from 150 (general) to 300 (place: sink, table, stove etc.).

WHICH FORMULA SHOULD BE USED TO CALCULATE ILLUMINATION?

In order to calculate the required lumen, ie which lamp to buy for each environment, there are well-defined formulas, which consider the color of the walls, the height of the right foot and the arrangement of the lamps.

As a general rule, we can use the following formula: desired average lux x area of ​​the environment. For example: if the general area of ​​the room is 8 square meters, the calculation will be 8 x 150 = 1,200 lumens. Another example: if a local kitchen area is 5 square meters, the account should be made as follows 5 x 300 = 1500 lumens.

In the market, there are several types of lamps, which are produced with different materials and models. Among the most common are fluorescent, halogen and  LED  – the latter being considered the most modern.

The power of the lamp (watts) tells you how much electrical energy it consumes, but that does not mean that the more power the more light it will generate. The  LED lamps , for example, provide the same light output as a standard bulb, but at a much lower power.

Lighting is one of the key elements that can be used to maintain a pleasant, functional and welcoming environment. Therefore, always try to identify what type of light is ideal for each space in your home, giving harmony to it and giving your personal touch.
